Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

History buffs will enjoy all the significant and notable features that you’ll experience with a trip to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Just an hour and 15 minutes from Towson, you’ll be transported back in time to the location that played a significant role in the Civil War and the onset of American rail transportation. Plan your visit by selecting some places you want to go, including the 3,745 acre National Historical Park. As you explore all the historic aspects of Harpers Ferry, you could take a trade workshop to learn the art of blacksmithing or Victorian candy making. Jefferson Rock in Harpers Ferry was described by Thomas Jefferson as having “the most stupendous scenes in nature.”
Kilgore Falls

The Falling Branch Area of Rocks State Park, also known as Kilgore Falls, is a striking destination just 25 miles north of Towson. It sits on 67 acres of land and features areas to set up a picnic, a half-mile trail, and swimming. The most well-known element in the park is the 17-foot-high vertical drop waterfall. Kilgore Falls is close enough that you don’t have to worry about lodging, but if you do want to experience this site for more than one day, there are a few bed & breakfast and hotel options nearby.
Deep Creek

Nestled in the mountains of western Maryland is Deep Creek Lake — a four-season destination three hours from Towson in Garrett County. This is the perfect weekend getaway with plenty luxurious lodging options, activities to explore, and fun events to attend. Perfect for the fall season is biking, hiking, arcades and bowling. The Autumn Glory Festival takes place over five days in October to celebrate the season. If you want to have a more relaxing experience, Deep Creek is also home to a number of spas and salons.

Assateague Island
If you’ve ever wanted to take in the beauty of fishing, biking, camping, and wild horses, you should add Assateague Island to your list of potential destinations. This barrier island is located off the eastern coast of Maryland, a little over three hours from Towson. It’s 37 miles long and is the home of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which includes red foxes, Atlantic horseshoe crab, and the famous wild ponies. Sign up for the ranger guided programs to learn all about the island, shoot some amazing wildlife photos (from a distance), or camp in one of the oceanside areas.
