Car rentals are a great thing. There is no doubt about it. You make a reservation, fly to a city, head to the kiosk, grab your keys, and off you go. But, what most people do not know is that renting a car from the airport costs you more money! Why? Because it costs the car rental company more money to have a location at the airport. In some locations, the daily rate at the airport is anywhere from $10-$20 more per day. So what are you to do?

Obviously, there is a convenience to having a location at the airport, but if you’re renting a car for several days and looking to save some money, we have a solution!

For travelers flying into BWI, here is what you can do with just a little creativity and it will only cost you $10.

Step 1:

Make a car rental reservation at Towson Economy Auto Rental ($10+/day less expensive than the airport!)

Step 2:

Head to the BWI Light Rail stop after you grab you luggage

Step 3:

Buy a Light Rail ticket (around $2) and take the Northbound Train to Lutherville

Step 4:

When you get close to the Lutherville stop, call yourself an Uber or Lyft that will take you to Towson Economy Auto Rental ($6-$8)

Step 5:

Get in your rental and off you go!

On your return trip, you can use the same plan in reverse. It’s that simple!

How much money could this save you?

If you’re renting a car for a week, you could save anywhere from $70 to $140 on your car rental. After subtracting the cost to use the Light Rail and Uber/Lyft, you’re looking at a total savings of $50 to $120 a week! You could use that money to go out to a fancy restaurant or to stash away in your savings.
